Just before Christmas in 2006, A Place to Bark founder Bernie Berlin was walking through the kennels of her local animal control office in Sumner County, Tenn.
She came across a poor puppy who suffered injuries all across her body. Some wounds were old; some were new and full of infection. The most glaring injury of all: The dog had no ears. Judging by the extent of the dog's injuries, Bernie's best guess was the puppy (later named Noel) was used as a bait dog. Bait dogs are used to train other dogs how to fight.
Bernie took her home and after several months of rest and lots of antibiotics, Noel was nursed back to health. Without the kindness of those who donated to A Place to Bark, Noel would not have survived.
In June 2007, Bernie traveled to Madison, Wisconsin with Noel and paid a visit to her friends at Suburban Harley Davidson in Thiensville. The workers at the dealership were very excited to see Noel and hear her story. One gentleman in particular, a parts manager named Al, was smitten by Noel. Al's previous dog, Basenji, died. He wasn't actively looking for a pet but decided it was meant for him to be Noel's new owner.
Al and Bernie talked over a few days and Bernie brought Noel over to his house for a visit.
She settled in quickly, met Al's cats and adjusted nicely to a new lifestyle.
Noel is now a very happy dog in a loving home.
